Ancient Roots: Originally known as Mogador, Essaouira has a history that dates back to the 5th century BC when the Carthaginians established a trading post here. Over the centuries, it has seen the influence of Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs, each leaving their mark on the city.
A Melting Pot: By the 18th century, Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah founded the modern city of Essaouira, designed by the French architect Théodore Cornut. The city’s unique layout and fortified walls, which combine European military architecture with North African traditions, earned it a UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001.
